Description
The Immaculata Shelter, located at 17 Sturdee Ave, Rosebank, in the Sisters of Mercy Immaculata Hall, offers vital services to those experiencing homelessness in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. Operated by the Rosebank Homeless Association (RHA), the shelter provides not only a safe place to stay but also critical support to help individuals regain their independence and dignity. The shelter is one of the few dedicated spaces for homeless individuals in the area, offering a much-needed refuge for those in need.
What the Shelter Provides
The Immaculata Shelter offers overnight accommodation for up to 100 residents, consisting primarily of men and women aged 28 and older. Additionally, up to 120 day visitors are supported, receiving access to bathing facilities and a hot breakfast. Residents are given a light breakfast and a hot evening meal, alongside access to bathing facilities, a secure place to sleep, and storage for personal belongings. The shelter also provides clothing, toiletries, and blankets, as available, to meet the basic needs of all individuals staying there.
How the Shelter Operates
The shelter operates Monday to Friday and is closed on public holidays. During the day, residents are required to leave the shelter in search of work or to attend to other personal matters, returning each evening to the shelter for rest and safety. Those seeking accommodation are assessed for suitability to ensure that individuals receive the appropriate care and support. The shelter’s mission is not only to provide a safe haven but also to empower individuals to regain their independence and dignity through a secure environment.
Challenges Faced by the Shelter
While the shelter strives to meet the needs of all those who seek help, it faces several challenges. The most significant challenge is limited space, especially during periods of high demand or emergencies, which makes it difficult to accommodate everyone. Additionally, the provision of adequate clothing and other basic necessities can be a struggle, especially when resources are stretched. Despite these challenges, the shelter continues to provide essential support thanks to the generous contributions of donors and volunteers.
How the Public Can Help
The shelter is always in need of donations to ensure it can continue providing its essential services. Contributions of food, clothing, blankets, bedding, toiletries, and cash are always welcomed. These donations directly support the well-being of the shelter’s residents and help maintain the operations of the facility.
The community is advised to make all monetary donations directly to the shelter to avoid scams. The Rosebank Homeless Association does not have representatives on the streets soliciting donations. For all donations, please contact Michael Ntuli directly at +27 73 321 0968.
