Rosebank, often celebrated for its lush, green streets and vibrant urban canopy, is one of Johannesburg’s most beautifully forested neighbourhoods. The abundance of trees here not only enhances the aesthetic charm of the area but also plays a vital role in supporting biodiversity, and creating a more liveable urban environment for residents and businesses alike.

In celebration of Arbour Month (September), the Rosebank Management District (RMD) is partnering with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) to launch an exciting community planting programme. This initiative invites residents, businesses, institutions, and stakeholders within Rosebank to actively participate in sustaining and expanding Johannesburg’s valuable urban forest by adopting a tree.

How it works
JCPZ will provide adoptees with either indigenous or fruit trees, depending on availability, along with planting stakes and compost to ensure the tree’s healthy establishment. Once you receive your tree, you’ll commit to planting it within three days and maintaining it by watering and caring for it as needed. Trees can be planted on private property, but from the moment of handover, the responsibility of nurturing and protecting the tree lies with the adoptee.

This initiative reflects a collective effort to protect and enhance the green spaces that make Rosebank – and Johannesburg a more sustainable and inviting place to live, work, and visit.

Why trees matter
Trees are a cornerstone of healthy urban ecosystems. They help combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, provide shade that reduces urban heat, support local wildlife, and improve mental well-being for communities. By planting and caring for more trees, we contribute to a greener, cooler, and more resilient city.
