The Rosebank Management District is once again invites its members, stakeholders, and the broader community to support the Build-a-Backpack Campaign, a Mandela Day initiative, running until 31 July 2026. Now in its third year, the campaign was launched in partnership with the Rosebank Homeless Association to provide essential everyday items to vulnerable members of the community through the Immaculata Shelter in Rosebank.

Why It Matters

Homelessness in Johannesburg remains a complex and growing challenge. For many, the path to the streets is shaped by economic hardship, limited family support, mental health challenges, and barriers to accessing basic services. As the city grows, so too does the gap between those with shelter and those without, with the most vulnerable often falling furthest through the cracks.

Winter intensifies this reality. Falling temperatures place immense pressure on shelters, social workers, and organisations working to provide care and protection. Limited space, stretched resources, and ongoing shortages of clothing and essentials make community support not just valuable, but critical.

This is why initiatives like Build-a-Backpack matter. Launched by the Rosebank Management District in partnership with the Rosebank Homeless Association, the campaign reflects a broader commitment to inclusive precinct stewardship, recognising that a thriving neighbourhood is built on care and dignity for those in need. Addressing homelessness is not a once-off act of charity, but an ongoing responsibility to help build a neighbourhood where dignity is extended to those who need it most.

“The Rosebank Management District acknowledges the very real challenges of homelessness and the profound impact it has on our society. Through initiatives like Build-a-Backpack, we are proud to stand alongside our members, stakeholders, and the broader community in responding to those most in need.” Mikhaela Donaldson, District Manager

About the Immaculata Shelter

Located at the Rosebank Catholic Church, the Immaculata Shelter is one of the few dedicated refuges for people experiencing homelessness in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. Operated by the Rosebank Homeless Association, the shelter serves men and women aged 28 and older, offering overnight accommodation, a secure place to sleep, storage for personal belongings, and a nutritious daily meal. During the day, additional visitors are welcomed with access to bathing facilities and a hot breakfast, a critical lifeline for those not yet in residence.

The shelter operates Monday to Friday, with a structure designed to actively encourage independence, with residents spending their days seeking work or attending to personal matters. Beyond immediate relief, the Rosebank Homeless Association provides skills development and assistance with documentation, two key barriers that often stand between homelessness and stability.
