On Friday, 17 July, the Rosebank Management District (RMD) marked Mandela Day with two initiatives across the precinct: a community greening project at Sturdee Park and Keyes Events Park, and an “Escape from Reality Experience” for residents of local homeless shelters.
Greening Initiative
In partnership with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, the RMD brought together over 50 volunteers from the Rosebank community for a greening initiative at Sturdee Park and Keyes Events Park, both of which are open to the public daily until 6pm.
Together, volunteers planted over five indigenous trees along with a considerable amount of plants and flowers, painted park benches and fencing, and helped create cleaner, greener public spaces for the community to enjoy.
Acts of Kindness
As part of the day’s activities, a soup kitchen serving members of the homeless community was hosted by Workshop17, with logistical and security support provided by the district.
Elsewhere on the day, the RMD treated residents from the Cross the Divide and Immaculata homeless shelters to an “Escape from Reality Experience,” made possible with sponsorship from Ster-Kinekor, The Zone Management and Hyde Hotel. Residents enjoyed a movie screening at Ster-Kinekor, followed by a warm bowl of soup at Hyde Hotel.
A Shared Commitment
RMD District Manager Mikhaela Donaldson said the day’s initiatives reflect an ongoing commitment to supporting and uplifting the Rosebank community, and to creating public spaces within the precinct that are accessible and welcoming to everyone.
