In celebration of Women’s Month in Rosebank we thought it a good time to introduce some of the dynamic figures that keep the district not only running, but thriving as a key Joburg neighbourhood. Time to meet some of the behind the scenes figures shaping Rosebank. This week we interviewed Jessica Redinger.

Jessica Redinger is General Manager of the first voco hotel on the African Continent, voco – Johannesburg Rosebank located at The Bank. With more than 18 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, she is looking forward to using her leadership skills to motivate staff and ensure unique voco experiences for her guests. The hotel is set to open later this year. When she’s not at work she’s a keen trail runner and loves combing the racks in thrift stores to find the perfect addition to her wardrobe.
Most enjoyable aspect of your work?
The highlight of my day is interacting with people! In hospitality you meet the most amazing people, not as guests but also as your team. I look forward to handpicking my team of Hotelitarians (As Valor Hospitality refers to their staff members) and welcoming both locals and international travellers to our stunning hotel.

The greatest challenge over the past few months?
The pandemic has greatly impacted the market conditions in South Africa, and many industries, and hospitality in particular have been hit hard. In my case, this has delayed the official opening of the magnificent property that I am privileged to run. However, it’s not all doom and gloom. A positive challenge that the pandemic presented industry leaders is to reimagine hospitality, and question the way things have historically been done. It has led to innovations and called for brands and the team to think outside of the box.
What makes Rosebank special?
Rosebank is such an amazing hub with all amenities you could need within walking distance from each other! I find the balance between the cosmopolitan and creative in the area refreshing. Rosebank holds an atmosphere that has a distinct energy. You can feel the pulse when walking through the streets!
What are your favourite Rosebank attractions?
I am in love with the new SOKO District that has opened in The Mall, housing an array of South African designers, décor and eateries. I also really enjoy the art galleries with their different exhibitions throughout the year. However, my heart is, of course, at The Bank. I’m excited about its New York retro design elements and the fact that it is the perfect place to stay (voco), work (Workshop 17) and eat (Proud Mary).

The most memorable meal you have eaten in Rosebank?
Not being biased but I am a massive Proud Mary fan! For a pescatarian like myself they have great options – a go to meal that never disappoints is also the Falafel & Tabbouleh Salad. It’s a lunchtime favourite with great flavour and beautiful visual appeal. As a dinner treat the Pan-Seared Salmon is a must, with amazing salsa.
Top tip for a first-time visitor to Rosebank?
Be adventurous and explore this part of Johannesburg on foot so that you don’t miss any of the attractions. There are many places to pop in and visit and they are convenient to walk between. Plus, the beautiful trees in the suburb make for great scenery and many photo ops.
What positive changes have you observed in Rosebank over the past 3 years?
It is fantastic to see how the precinct has come together. As a newcomer, it has been amazing to see the interest in The Bank and voco Hotel. The welcome from neighbours and the sense of community is heartwarming. I have lived and worked in Sandton, Johannesburg for many years. Over this time it has been interesting to look over and see the Rosebank skyline grow and become an attraction and corporate hub of their own.
If you could change one thing about Rosebank, what would it be?
I would make it permanently Jacaranda season (but just in Rosebank)! The suburb is so full of Jacaranda trees that the purple season is a proper occasion and one that you have to experience.

What’s the one thing you think most people don’t know about the neighbourhood?
Rosebank is one of the safest areas in Johannesburg – this makes exploring the precinct on foot necessary!
What are you looking forward to seeing in Rosebank in future…?
Collaborations and partnerships, and when the hospitality and tourism industry opens up a bit more and you have the opportunity to share all that Rosebank has to offer, with the world”
Describe Rosebank in three words…
Urban, cosmopolitan and energetic
